Healthcare Identifier. A national system for uniquely identifying healthcare providers (organisations and individual healthcare providers) and individuals. HI Service assigns 16-digit number to identify organisation/individual. HI Service forms the basis of other government eHealth initiatives including Secure Messaging and My Health Record.
Individual Healthcare Identifier. Allocated to all individuals enrolled in the Medicare program or those who are issued with a Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) treatment card and others who seek healthcare in Australia.
To deliver a safe and secure method of exchanging healthcare information, the eHealth infrastructure must provide unique identification, authentication and encryption services. The 'identification' part of this process is undertaken by the Healthcare Identifier Service (HI Service).
Healthcare Provider Identifier – Individual. Allocated to healthcare providers involved in providing patient care. Every health care professional who has an AHPRA number (e.g. Pharmacist) will have an HPI-I in HI services.

Once a store is registered with My Health Record, they will receive a 16 digit unique number (unique to each registration) as part of the package from HI services.
